This Too Shall Pass

"This too shall pass" is something I will remind myself when I get very discouraged or hurt. This is not a Bible verse but there are Bible verses like this quote. I've tried to find out where this quote originated from but there doesn't seem to be a concrete answer. I believe the person had some knowledge of the Bible and was trying to use it to convey some of the verses that are in the Bible. Possibly trying to reiterate the meaning of the word hope. The word hope is defined as "a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen". Wanting a season or situation to pass is the same as hoping but as Christians, our hope is Christ. Christ will allow our trials to pass. We must remember; He knows what we can 'handle' or tolerate better than we know ourselves. He may even allow a trial to go past what we think we can handle to strengthen us.

Below is a list of Bible verses which mention 'coming to pass'. This may not be a complete list, only ones that I have found.

In the book of Genesis, "it came to pass" is mentioned more than once.

Deuteronomy 28 verses 1 and 15 talk about "it shall come to pass"

Acts 2:17 "and it shall come to pass in the last days"

Isaiah 67:24 "it shall come to pass…"

Ezekiel 12:25 "..which I speak will come to pass"

2 Corinthians 4:17-18 "For this light momentarily affliction….'"(momentarily…not lasting, this time will pass)

Romans 15:13 "…by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope"

There may be other verses, but these show that God wants us to know, this life and trials will pass eventually. It's better to look towards eternity with Him rather than dwelling on our current circumstances.

Someone once told me that nothing here on earth lasts forever. Good or bad. So, if I was thinking what I was going through was terrible and awful, it could be worse. It could last longer, or it could hurt more. Think about the worst possible scenario. Whatever it is, it could always be worse, and the awfulness could always last longer. They were trying to get me to understand that dwelling on the pain doesn't make it go away. Accepting where I was and learning to live with the way things are is better than wishing for something that may not come. While I still use some of this advice to this day when I think I can't face another day, what really keeps me going is the hope in Christ and His promises. No matter how much pain or suffering I am or may find myself in, He has promised peace and joy even during those times. I am finding that peace and joy not of my own free will, but through the Holy Spirit and His abiding within me to provide the peace and strength to face another day. When I find myself saying 'this too shall pass', I then look to Jesus and eternity with Him. I realize, this life will end too. This life and world we live in will pass. I have eternity that will never pass. Not just an eternal life, but an eternal life with God and all the blessings He has in store for me and all His followers.

Unfortunately, those that choose not to believe in Him or obey Him are faced with an eternal death in hell or the lake of fire. I don't know if anything can get worse than that but that is eternity, not this world. This is the one thing I can think of that can get no worse. Living in an eternity of fire and brimstone with the pain never and torture never ending. If you don't know Jesus as your Lord and Savior, I urge you to learn who He is and discover how real and alive he is as well as how much he loves you. He will not be the one sending you to hell, you will be sending yourself by rejecting the only one that ever truly loved you.
